WorleyParsons Edmonton is currently seeking an Intermediate 3D PDS Piping/Mechanical Designer for our Edmonton Office.

This position involves design work at an intermediate working level requiring preparation and interpretation of complex topographical piping drawings. It also requires working knowledge of, and interfaces with, other disciplines and their documents.


Responsibilties:


  • Drafting moderate to complex drawings, using 2D and 3D CADD which involves planning and layouts for major installations.
  • Conducting field visits and preparing as-built drawings and field sketches.
  • Assisting field forces during construction.
  • Assisting in more complicated elements, as part of a project group.
  • Checking the work of, and assisting in the training of, less experienced design personnel.
  • Developing light to intermediate designs, layouts requiring theoretical and practical design knowledge in a specialized field.
  • Creating design in 3D PDS piping and equipment models.
  • Extraction of design from PDS 3D, and the use of MicroStation as a final deliverable format.
  • Drafting intelligent P&ID's and working with 3D models.
  • Initial understanding of project schedules, milestones, progressing and inter-discipline relationships.
  • May exercise work direction over a small number of Junior Designers, involving guidance and instruction on work methods and checking finished work.
  • Exercises judgment and discretion in the selection and organization of work methods and procedures.
  • Makes recommendations for improving drafting and design techniques.
  • Assures that work performed complies with the accuracy level and time constraints required for the project.
  • Works under direct supervision with scope for planning and organization of work methods on assigned projects.
  • Receives assignments in terms of specific objectives and priorities. Work is reviewed for accuracy, completeness and accomplishment of objectives. .
  • May receive supervised / self-training in more advanced discipline work practices / applications.

Job Requirements

  • Technical school graduate with four or more years of piping design experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and piping design experience, preferably within an EPC environment.
  • Mature computer skills and working knowledge of applicable 2D & 3D CAD drafting / modeling programs.
  • Must have PDS design experience.



Reporting and Location:

This position is located in Edmonton, Alberta.
Position reports to the Piping Department Manager.

Other:

The annual salary for this position is $80,000 - $185,000, depending on expereince.

Support Name

Description

Anchor

A rigid device used to
prevent essentially all pipe rotation and displacement at the point of application.

Anchor bolt

A bolt which is embedded in
concrete and is used to attach to concrete structure.

Alloy pipe clamp

A pipe clamp made from low
chrome-moly (less than 5% chrome) material for the purpose of resisting the
effects of piping temperature in the 750 o F to 1100 o F range (399o C to 593o C)

Band Hanger

A pipe attachment providing
for vertical adjustment, consisting principally of a formed strap.

Beam Clamp

A clamping device used to
connect the reminder of a pipe hanger assembly to a structural beam, without
requiring welding .

Brace Assembly

An assembly made of pipe
support components designed to restrain a piping system from horizontal
forces.

Bracket

Cantilevered member, with or
without a kneebrace, designed to withstand a gravity load and/or horizontal
forces.

Cantilever

A structure member supported and fixed at only one end.

Cold shoe

A pipe shoe with an integral
insulation insert which has been designed for cold temperature piping system
application.

Cold Spring

The act of pre-stressing a
piping system during installation in order that the equipment reactions will

be lower in the operating condition.

Constant Support Hanger

A mechanical and spring coil
device which produces a relatively constant supporting effect, while
permitting vertical pipe movement.

Dummy support

Piping supports which are
often made from sections of pipe to provide support. The term “Dummy” indicates that there is no flow in the pipe section.

Guide

A device used to permit pipe
movement in a predetermined direction while restraining movement in other directions.

Pipe Clamp

A bolted pipe attachment
which clamp around the pipe to connect the pipe to the remainder of a pipe
hanger assembly.

Pipe Clip

A pipe attachment used to
hold the pipe directly to a structure, also referred to as a strap or pipe strap

Pipe Hanger

A device which is suspended
from a structure and used to carry the piping load in tension.

Pipe rack

A structure frame that is
used to support piping systems.

  • The successful candidate will join a piping team on major domestic and international projects and must have experience of multi-discipline projects.
  • Responsible for performing plant layout and piping design activities using project approved “in house” PDMS modelling and 2D drafting systems.
  • Plant Layout, Modelling of equipment and piping, production of Isometrics, GA’s and MTO’s from the model, preferably experienced in use of PDMS version 11.6 / 12.0.
  • Produce the various discipline deliverables to the agreed schedule.
  • Apply good interpersonal skills, liaising with members of other disciplines and departments.
  • Apply an awareness and willingness to work as a team member.
  • Quality Assurance – work within the provisions and guidelines of the Quality Assurance systems.

STEAM SYSTEM PIPING

SCOPE
This is a general guide for the design and installation of steam systems.

STEAM

· Live steam supply and exhaust steam return headers shall be located on overhead pipe racks and shall have block valves at the process unit limit.

· Wherever possible, live steam and exhaust steam tines shall be the outside lines of the overhead pipe rack in order to provide accessibility for expansion loops, pressure reducing stations and flow instrumentation.

· Live steam and exhaust steam return lines shall be connected to the top of the headers.

· Separators for removal of steam condensate ahead of turbines etc .. may be justified only at locations remote from the boiler plant or main steam supply. Separators for removal of oil from exhaust steam shall be installed just ahead of the boiler feedwater treating equipment or surge drum but will not normally be required on the exhausts of individual items of rotating equipment.

· Block valves shall be provided in branch lines from Live steam and exhaust steam headers; these shall normally be located at the steam header. Except turbine exhaust block valves shall be at the turbine only, without a block valve at the header.

· Single block and check valves shall normally be provided at the steam injection point for designated process lines. Double block and-bleed valves with a single check valve shall be provided for heavy oil services. When required by the process design.

· Steam traps shall be provided at all steam separators, header drip legs and other low points.

· Steam trap discharge and other condensate lines may be consolidated into headers and returned to the boiler feedwater system. Discharge to the waste system shall be made only if return headers are not economically feasible.

Drip legs shall be installed on steam headers as follows:

a) At dead ends.

b) Upstream of risers

c) Upstream of expansion joints or raised expansion loops.

d) Upstream of block and reducing valves

e) Every 350 feet (107 m) in straight, horizontal steam lines (I.e. without natural drainage points)


Steam for purging shall be taken from the nearest available steam supply header.

Steam smothering lines with trapped drains shall be provided to combustion chambers and header boxes of fired heaters and on safety relief valve stacks discharging flammable products to atmosphere. Valves on these steam smothering lines shall be located at least 50 feet
(15.2 m) away from the heater or stack and shall be readily accessible for emergency use by personnel.

Jurisdictional requirements (i.e. local state. And federal) shall be met in the fabrication, alteration and repair of all steam and condensate piping.

PIPING GENERAL ARRANGEMENT TIPS

  • All process and utility piping shall be located above grade where possible. Installation of piping in trenches shall require approval of the Engineering Department.
  • All piping shall be routed for the shortest practical run but, shall include a sufficient number of fittings for expansion, flexibility and access by personnel and maintenance equipment. Pockets shall be avoided in all lines where possible.
  • All lines inside process unit limits shall preferably be run side by side on overhead pipe supports. Lines outside process unit limits may be run on sleepers.
  • Branch connections shall normally be at a 90 degree intersection to the run pipe. 45-degree laterals for uses other than branch blow down and relief lines shall normally be avoided. In no case shall a welded branch connection be designed with an intersecting angle of less than 45 degrees.
  • All piping shall be arranged to facilitate support. Where possible, all lines shall be run at elevation intervals which would enable them to be supported on common structural steel supports.
  • Control valves. Pressure-relief valves and instrumentation devices shall be accessible from platforms or grade and grouped at main operating levels.
  • Lines carrying molten solids or materials of high viscosity shall be self-draining.
  • Consideration shall be given to providing flexibility in the piping at storage tanks to allow for future tank and piping settlement.
